Jacob, the bottom line is that they are both excellent actresses and each did a great job in her own right. They probably did film the Broadway show. If you live in NYC, you could actually watch it here: http://www.nypl.org/locations/lpa/theatre-film-and-tape-archive.

Now, I didn't know Cynthia Nixon was the original Becca, but I have no doubt she was superb. But for many people (who aren't familar to Broadway, which sadly is the majority of the population) Nixon will ALWAYS be Miranda.
I saw Kidman in 'Rabbit Hole' and it was a really great, under-stated performance. You could just tell there was something extra in Kidman's eyes, a subtext of sorts. She was really great.
I don't know, I wish they would have filmed the Broadway show, then I could be more qualified to compare.

Beth, once again, totally true. I guess I somehow wish that the best actors are always cast. Seeing the line up at Sundance makes me think, as you said, the world of indie film has changed. As a producer, you need to bring in names for these roles. Otherwise, distribution is near impossible. Ideally, I want to go to the movies and see new faces. But, I think we keep seeing less and less new faces because producers don't want to risk the commercial success of a movie by taking a chance on a new actor. I am not saying it is wrong, it's the moneymaking machine that is Hollywood.

Good point Beth. I wonder if films who kept their original cast from a Broadway run were in fact successful in the end. I can't remember the last time when that was done ....

Thanks for the feedback Mick. I actually didn't even recognize Winona Ryder until after the movie! I agree, I like how Aronofsky chooses his protagonists. "The Wrestler" is still my favorite!

Also just to add...you mention that it's an indie film. The world of indie film is not what it used to. Yes there are still some gems that are made and seen by the masses with an unknown or lesser known cast such Winters Bone (although I'm not sure if one would even consider that distribution successful) but the indies that get SEEN are the indies that cast known names. As a filmmaker, I'm not saying I'm thrilled about this but it's just how it is. If you make a film, you want people to see it and although I wish the equation were often deponent on other factors, known names bring in larger audiences. Take a look at the Sundance line up. It's filled with indie films starring big names. I'm not saying this is good or bad as that would open up a whole new can of worms....just wanted to point out that just because rabbit hole is an indie doesn't mean kidman should NOT have cast herself.

Interesting thoughts Ross. I didn't see the film but agree with the comments that have been made. Nixon, although a great actress has not been a leading lady in film and though she most defimatly has the acting chops both on stage and on screen, it wouldn't make sense for Kidman, or anyone involved in the film to cast anyone else.
It'd be interesting to see if any play-turned-film kept any of it's original leading cast.

Totally agree. Exceptional acting all around and every character draws you in to their psychosis. Even Winona Ryder's character, who you failed to mention, incites pity and fear at the same time.

Aronofosky is no stranger to obsessed protagonists either. One of his best films in my opinion is The Fountain where Hugh Jackman embodies several driven men from different time periods in a highly underrated performance.

Yeah, good point Redman. I guess she had already made the decision to do SATC 2 so it was a moot point in that respect.
What about Slattery? haha

Sorry but Nixon chose to do the hack job that is SATC 2. Didn't hear one peep out of her that she was interested in doing the film. It wouldn't have gotten made but Nixon wasn't going after it either.
